Social media seems so quick, that I've gotten lazy! Although I feel I need to keep the blog a bit more active, just in case I have an issue with other media outlets.

I recently had to renew my webpage designer platform and hosting fees. Each renewal time, I feel the need to explore other, less expensive options but I never find any, except for this free blog. I don't get much traffic from the webpage, which is probably my own fault. I'm not into the marketing of my art, so it's rare to have sales. But all my art is for sale and you're welcome to inquire about a sale.

I do paint a lot and post on my Instagram page which is forwarded automatically to my Facebook Artist page. I try to update my webpage images with the very best pieces. So please check out any of these sites - listed on the right under my profile photo.

In other news, I've been retired for almost 3 years now. I love it! I had been teaching classes at the nearby community center, but Covid put an end to that - but am on the schedule again for September 2021. If you are in the Columbus area and are interested in learning the basics of oil painting, keep an eye on my webpage or contact me.

During Covid, I've been taking a number of online painting classes. Watercolor from Shari Blaukopf in Montreal, landscapes with Mark Boedges in the US, and most recently with Paul Foxton in the UK learning to paint roses and daffodils! It's been a good way to learn new skills which I hope I'll retain for my own work going forward!

Below is one of my recent studio paintings, from my own photograph and life (while they were fresh!). This was not part of Paul's class, but before that class started. I'm very proud of this one!

It's almost warm enough for plein air. A few of my buddies and I have gone out a few times, but it's just not warm enough for me yet! Here's the most recent plein air painting, although I had to rework most of it in the studio. I've found that my studio work is much more refined and realistic, while my plein air work is much looser, with the very short timeframe (2 hrs). I've come to realize that is not a bad thing.

I hope to post more here on the blog for my followers, if they're still around and didn't give up on me! My friends know that I love to tinker with making art gear and sometimes I enjoy that part more than actually painting! I really like all the designing and brainstorming to make something simple and inexpensive.

I travel several times each year, which always revolve around plein air painting! I'm getting ready for a trip coming up next month to Cape Ann, Massachusetts and we will be flying. We got the cheapest flights, and I don't intend on checking a bag. We are renting a house which has a washer and dryer, so I am going to try to pack few clothes. But I also need to have a smaller amount of art supplies, since everything will need to be carry-on luggage.

While I enjoy working in oils and pastels, and have traveled with both, I decided to get out my dusty watercolor paints and jump on the "urban sketcher" bandwagon. I've been studying up on this style of painting, which uses permanent ink to sketch the scene, and may or may not end up with watercolor washes to enhance the design. I tried learning traditional watercolor painting about 15 years ago, but found it tedious. Because I can be much more free with the sketcher style of painting, I'm going to try it for this trip. Here's a shot of all the gear, which I will detail later:

Watercolor gear travels very easily. I have a travel tripod and decided to made a platform for it to work on the sketches. I can also use the platform on my lap, if I decide that is more comfortable. I thought you might enjoy seeing my project and the gear I plan on taking.

For the platform, I am using a piece of thin Gatorboard which is a very rigid type of foam core board. I may be using loose watercolor paper and so I covered the board with clear Contact paper to protect the board's paper from moisture and to make it easier to remove the tape holding down the paper. I also wanted some type of ridge along the sides and bottom so that there was a lip to keep things from rolling off the board. I attached one layer of mat board, about an inch wide, to the edges. I wanted something that was fairly flat so it wouldn't be in the way when drawing.

To attach the board to the tripod via the quick connect plate, I mounted a t-nut to a 3/8" thick, 9" x 2.5" wood board. Then glued that wood to the underside of the Gatorboard. No real need to use screws for this. Then I put some decorative Duck tape onto the wood and surrounding Gatorboard for strength and protection. Overall, it is very lightweight but very sturdy.

I ran out of one roll of Duck tape, and had to use another design to finish!

Here is my travel tripod in its bag, along with a 16" laptop shoulder bag. The platform fits perfectly into this bag, along with most of the other gear.

They fit perfectly into my tiny carry-on luggage, although I may not take the shoulder bag on this trip, as I will be taking a backpack also.I figured I would put all the art supplies (the heavier items) in the wheeled luggage, and put my lightweight clothes into my backpack for traveling. I am likely to have my luggage searched because of all the weird art things. Seems like this happens every trip. So I'd like to have all the suspicious looking things in one bag.

Here's some actions shots! Here I have taped down a piece of watercolor paper on the contact paper covered platform. I've put a piece of kitchen cupboard liner mesh under my watercolor palette to it doesn't move around. I have a tiny water jar that has a magnet on the bottom, so that can stick nicely onto my palette. (I'm taking larger leak-proof water containers also).

Here a 7x10" Arches watercolor block fits nicely and stays put with the mat board edging.

I'll also take a neat 3.9 x 9.8" Arches watercolor block. Looks like a great shape for painting landscapes! And some Arches 300# paper cut into 5x7" and 4x6". I always take way too many painting surfaces, but I'll have choices:

In this tin are my pens, pencil, several brushes, some white gouache, and in the lid, a flexible ruler, and pieces of artist's tape. I'll take a small roll of tape also, but having a few pieces in tin is a easy place to store tape (which gets used over and over). I have several brush cases but this jewelry tin was perfect.
I'm Still Painting!Hi! Wow, it's been a while, hasn't it? I'm still painting, but have been too lazy to do a real blog post, and usually just post on Instagram now. Please follow me there if you want to see what I've been up to. https://www.instagram.com/nancylvance/

But first, here's a post for you plein air artists out there who may need a new painting box. These are my personal opinions - take it or leave it. :

A DISCUSSION ON PAINTING BOXES

One of my good friends, who I travel and paint with, is in the market
for a new painting box before one of our upcoming trips that involved
airplanes. I’ve been a plein air gear hoarder for a while and thought I would
put together a list of good and bad models that I had some experience with.

She was thinking of just repairing her current model, but it was still
a large box to put into a suitcase. I suggested that she think about whether to
buy a new regular box, or just something small for traveling. Could she adjust
to painting on a box with a smaller mixing area by cleaning the palette more
often?

I also suggested to put out a message to our local painting group that
she was looking for a used box for sale. I have a running search on eBay for
painting boxes and gear, which alerts me to new items. Occasionally some nice
ones (new and used) show up.

Below I write about wet panel carriers, painting boxes, and
tripods. All but one painting box below requires a tripod. I prefer the “clam shell”
style where the mixing pallet is directly below the painting. Other styles have
the mixing pallet hanging off the tripod legs, lower down – near the hips of
the painter. The painting is held at eye level on a device on the top of the
tripod. I always recommend buying a quality tripod, which can last a long time.
Good name brand tripods will also have repair parts available, if needed.

PanelPak. These work very
nicely if you are only going to carry two panels home. http://www.panelpak.com/

company. I owned three: the Cigar Box, the 9x12 Guerilla Box, and the 5x7 Thumb

to haul all the tubes inside, so bulky boxes. They have a few new styles that
copy the type that hangs on tripod legs.

like it, cheaply made, but costly. Terrible customer service. These are the pallet

felt like I had my belly right into the wet pallet.

For tripods, buy a quality brand and it will last for years. Look for a
complete tripod with a ball head and quick release plate. You don’t need the
type that are used with video cameras with the arm used for panning the camera.
Think about how small it folds up to fit inside a suitcase or backpack. I always
recommend going to a local photo supply shop and see what they have in person. But
there are many places online to buy. Once I narrow down the model I like, I
google and can usually find a pretty good deal. Expect to pay between $120- 190
(you are worth it!! <span style="font-family: "segoe ui emoji" , sans-serif; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-char-type: symbol-ext; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-symbol-font-family: "Segoe UI Emoji";">😉 ). I
prefer Manfrotto or Benro brands. I bought an off-name brand, which was carbon
fiber (lighter weight). But I found that because it was a smaller travel size,
the weight was not that much different than a standard aluminum version.

I like tinkering and building things. Recently I was, again, attempting to learn how to use gouache (opaque watercolor) paint. It seemed like the gear should have been simpler, but it wasn't, so I played around to make it more user friendly.

Although I have built many different setups from wood, I didn't feel like reinventing the wheel this time. I have an older EasyL brand painting box that I love. It's been all over the world with me. They don't make this model anymore.
But newer shiny painting boxes have come on the market over the years since I bought this little box. I've bought and sold numerous brands and models for different reasons or mediums. I think I own about 10 different models right now. They all have their uses, but this little one sat on the shelf. So I decided to make it work for an exclusive gouache painting box. I work very small with gouache because of the fast drying time making it difficult to paint larger than 6x8 (in my opinion!).

The gouache I was using is the Caran d'Ache pan set which is contained in a nice metal box, but that makes it heavy. The little pans of each color pop out easy enough so I found an empty metal watercolor box that they all fit into. Perfect fit!!
To make it convenient when painting, I needed to organize the inside the wooden box. I took a piece of HDPE 1/8" plastic sheet and cut it to size. This material is a hard plastic which I use in several of my other painting boxes as the palette where I mix paint. It can be cut with a utility knife and holes can be drilled with a cordless drill. The micro magnets are powerful little things that many artists use to keep things steady on their gear. Because the plastic is a tiny bit flexible, the magnets popped into the holes I drilled and stayed fine without glue. They are the little rounds things shown in the plastic below.
I am left handed, so I arranged the locations of the magnets in a way that worked best for me. They hold onto the metal box with the pan paints, a metal tray for water to clean brush (top left), and a tiny jar to hold clean water (to use to dip the end of the brush to help the paint flow). I added a little magnetic clip to the metal tray which holds a folded paper towel that will be wet (to place any tube paint to keep it from drying too fast). The setup works well on its own on a tabletop. The extra open white area of the HDPE will serve as an additional paint mixing area.
Once popped into the box, it makes a neat little package! The sketchbook or paper fits nicely in the upper area. The wood box has an additional side wing that attaches to the left side of the box with space to lay my brushes and tubes of paint. The box is fitted on the bottom with a tripod nut and will be attached to my travel tripod when I am painting standing outside.
YAY! I'd worked in the engineering field for over 30 years and was lucky to have been employed by a great company for the last 21 1/2 yrs, with great benefits including a real pension in addition to a 401k with an 8% match.

So on my 62nd birthday I retired! Now I am a lady of leisure doing whatever I feel like!!! Maybe that will include more time to post on the blog again. I got so lazy by just posting on Instagram which posts automatically on my Facebook artist page. Hopefully I can now do both the blog and social media!
She also links to Michael's blog with his report on the retreat. Click on the link below:
http://www.fromcurioustocreative.com/art-colony-pilgrimage/

I knew only a tiny bit about Brown County and always wanted to learn more. I asked Michael to figure out a retreat there, since he knew a local painter, Douglas Runyon, an expert on the area. It was really great to have a retreat with Michael that didn't involve airline travel! This area was about 3 1/2 hrs from home. Douglas was a wealth of information, and certainly the only way we could have had access to the best parts of this area!

Although it was considered a painting retreat, I couldn't seem to get in the groove to paint (but that is ok, as I needed a vacation one way or another!). Also, because of the late, late spring in Ohio, I had only been able to paint outside once before heading west. I tried to do a couple pastels and oils, but wasn't happy with my work. The only piece I ended up with was from a photograph taken in Brown County State Park. I painted a 6x8 pastel at the table of our cabin one afternoon. These pics are from two different cellphones. The top pic shows my cellphone with photo, the value sketch (trying to do this for all paintings!), and the final painting (which is a bit washed out in this photo).
But when I looked back on my notebook, I hadn't added any notes since my trip to Florida last winter!

I do know that I was very lucky to have sold 4 paintings last year, enjoyed painting with my Plein air pals and doing a little bit of traveling. I really should keep an art journal this year.

I believe 2018 holds much fun and adventure!!!Nancy L.

I was recently accepted into an exhibit opening January 4th at the McConnell Art Center, Worthington Ohio. The theme is interesting - 3 points in time on an artist's journey. 37 artists submitted 52 sets (set = 3 items) of work (some submitted more than one set). 20 artists were accepted.

The reception will be open to the public on Thursday, January 11, 6:30-8pm in the main gallery. If you are in the area, please come! The exhibit will hang until March 18.

Below is a snapshot of my three pieces. (They may be hung differently at the gallery.) We were required to send 5 sentences that describe what led us to changes between the 3 pieces.
Having great fun with these small paintings. I've taken lots of photos for more paintings.

But first, I want to share something I painted specifically for my kitchen wall. I recently painted over the "builder beige" walls with a lighter warm taupe. I needed something on the only open wall in that area. Below you'll see my collection of 1/2 pint latex "oops" paint. I pick these up at the hardware store paint department. These "oops - wrong color" pots sell for a buck or two. I've used these along with some tube artist acrylic paint on stretched canvas. I don't usually use stretched canvas, but wanted something larger and these were affordable. I used brushes and palette knife.

Here's the winner on my wall! I wanted something subtle and soft. PERFECT.
Back in the studio again! I tried to paint from life in the studio, but my schedule works better to paint from photographs. I project the photos from a thumb drive to my studio TV. Much better than trying to print them out. In addition to the paintings below I've shot a few more photos that might make good paintings, so check back soon!

I'm pretty happy with these two paintings! Both are oil on gessobord.

The first one is a 6x6". This is a little pot thrown by my friend Karen Lohr. If you look closely in the first photo - to the right on the table you can see the pot shown in the photo and painting. Love this little pot!
This next one is a 6x8". I've seen many paintings posted online of eggs. I thought I'd give it a try, using my cobalt blue pot and plate.
I am always looking for items for my art - either items to use in still life, or items I can reuse for a studio or plein air gear purpose. The key is to not go into a thrift store with only one item in mind. You have to be open minded and think outside the box! Sometimes I feel I enjoy tinkering for gear more than painting!

I have found good use of a couple office supply items. One is the metal paper sorter bin. These brand new would cost in the $35 range. So far, I have collected at least 5 of these "vintage era" models at thrift stores with prices ranging from $3-6 each. You can find something similar in a horizontal version, but this vertical style works really well for painting panel storage - either unpainted or finished paintings. I put a different size or style stack in each slot. I think I have enough of these bins, but each time I see one I can't pass it up! This one was at Goodwill for $3 just yesterday.

Here's my supply closet with four different bins. I think I still have room for the newest one!:

See how easy it is to find the panel you want without unstacking a horizontal pile?

Another item I always look for is a copy holder. Brand new, these can run between $13-35. You can find them used in plastic or metal for less than $5. These are nice for holding a reference photo, or even the board you are painting on - if you like to work sitting down like I do.

These are the metal pair I found this earlier last week. The smaller one on the left doesn't fold down and is very sturdy, so I decided to try this for a painting easel for small hardboard panels.

Here you can see I added some HandiTAK reusable adhesive putty. This stuff is useful for many things.

I pressed this 6x6 gessobord onto it and it stayed put throughout my painting!

Another great find were these old stereo speaker stands. A pair for only $3!! What did I have in mind? Why an adjustable still life stand, that's what!

Here I used an older 9x12 cradled board clamped into the jaws of the speaker stand for my platform.

Then I use a simple still life light box to set on top. (This is a small version, while I have a more complex model for bigger setups). I make a lot of stuff out of foam core board. Super easy to work with - this box is 3 sides and a bottom, glued together. I usually don't worry too much about it getting knocked over, but could clamp it down easy enough.

For a backdrop, I added a sheet of scrap booking paper. I buy this paper in a big book that gives me lots of options of colors or textures.

If I want a colored "floor" I could add another color of paper, add some fabric, or just leave it dark. On the left photo below, I have added a piece of white foam core board, and put a piece of styrene down so I would have clearer reflections of the objects. On the right, I added a loose piece of black foam core board to block some of the light from my overhead lighting. Easy to move around to cover as needed.

I used the second speaker stand for holding some light fixtures. I play around with different light bulbs with different hues or intensity. This view shows I used a piece of white foam core for the lid to reflect a bit more light into the setup from below.
And who is that little guy in the spotlight? Well, I call him the Goofy Turtle! Look at that cute little face!! A friend gave him to me a couple years ago. I was in the mood to paint something fun yesterday. It was a bit tricky capturing the glaze colors and shine though.
I've learned over the years, that I have several of these a year. I seem to have one in the fall and once the weather gets colder and dark earlier I usually get busy in the studio again. Although I am still working full-time, unless I already have a project started, I don't feel very creative coming home from work. I do most of my painting on the weekends.

I had recently tried to paint a couple 6x6" still life and wasn't happy with the results. Then decided that I just needed to paint something and picked one of the contemporary painters who I follow to study. I copied one of their paintings, so I will not show it here complete. It will stay in my private collection as I do not use another artists' work - paintings or photographs - as a reference for my own art.

This was a lesson to get out of my rut and it was really fun! I learned quite a bit, didn't understand what they saw in certain passages, but in the end, I really like the painting. I will take what I learned here to attempt my own still life painting.

I'll leave you a tiny snippet of my version here:

Nancy L. Vancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11482532327670658220noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34007836.post-75954969641283285682017-10-14T17:00:00.003-04:002017-10-14T17:00:45.277-04:00New Pastel PaperI've been using the UArt brand of sanded pastel paper for a few years. It had only come in a tan color until recently when they released a "dark" paper. Depending on the grit selected, the color goes from almost black to a charcoal grey. I bought some 500 grit Dark and gave it a test run today.

We were painting at a local farm and I wanted to see how this new paper would work for plein air work. I was only using a limited selection of NuPastel sticks today, to keep my setup light and compact.

I was painting the chicken coop next to the big barn. My paper was 6x8", so I needed to keep things simple. I did not add a chicken as they were not visible from my view.

I found the paper worked just like the tan color, but I had a hard time getting the colors to pop against the black. My painting did not show the brightness of the day. With my limited selection of pastels, it was difficult. I feel this color paper would work really well for studio work and having my full selection of pastels available. This paper should work really nicely for some really bright subject matter, such as flowers.
I usually have trouble getting settled enough to paint, but this year, I had a couple paintings that I am happy with. One of my friends asked me to do a 2 hour pastel class on Thursday morning to get us warmed up. I had four students. I'd used a photo I'd taken last year at the retreat for the reference during the class.

Here is the finished demo. I really like this one!

The next day, I painted two paintings. Several of us painted at the marina along the river. A couple of us liked the view across the river with the Foxy Lady and the colorful kayaks. I was working in pastel.
But surprise! We just got setup and the owner came along to get it ready to take out on the lake. I was able to get the teal cover in place on my surface before he removed it. While he cleaned the boat, I was able to get more of the boat drawn in, and then he left!
After lunch back at the lodge, several of us drove out to the Vermilion River park south of town. This is always a tough scene to paint, but it's fun to be painting right down in the riverbed. Not sure it reads correctly, but we had fun!
The last day, I sat on a bench overlooking the beach and lake. There was a family on the beach and I used that as my center of interest.

As I was painting, the mother asked if she could buy my painting! I said certainly, and she said she would check with hubby down on the beach. Soon after, her son came up from behind, and said he wanted to buy it as a surprise for his mother! YES! I got it prepared for him to pickup later by adding a white mat and putting it into a clear bag. Love selling off the easel!!
In the afternoon we had an art sale for the public of the new paintings along with a few others from home. I sold another pastel brought from home that was framed of lemon slices. The gal said it was her birthday! Perfect!

Here's a shot of the paintings that came home:
I always struggle to get photos of my art which, to me, look like the actual art. I have several good cameras, and my cellphone of course, but when I post things online - they sure don't show the heart of what I painted. I know most artists struggle with this same dilemma. Everyone has a different device and screen to view photos online, so it's a mute point to worry about it. So, my advice, go see the art in person!

With that said, here is the piece I finished last night. I wanted a loose feeling and push away from local color. I worked more intuitively on this piece and didn't copy the actual scene.

I am preparing art for an upcoming exhibit with my local plein air group. This piece may be included, although I have one more to paint and have to decide on which of the four paintings will be hung. In the next blog post, I will include information on the exhibit - so go see art in person and feel the heart of the artist in all the paintings!Nancy L. Vancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11482532327670658220noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34007836.post-8775120022553990652017-07-08T17:42:00.001-04:002017-07-08T17:42:06.182-04:00Painting the Day LiliesMy group painted today at a small family owned day lily farm. We had over 30 painters show up, which is a big group!

It was overwhelming with all the beautiful varieties of lilies. I painted with pastels and set up just down the small hill below the rows, looking up. Painting flower heads are pretty difficult, so I just painted them all.
What with working full time, and having the instant posting off my cellphone to Instagram, I just haven't kept up with adding multiple adventures to this blog!

So this will be a big photo dump! Will try to keep up with the blog from now on, as it's an important tool for myself, let alone all you fans out there! These are quick cellphone photos. Seems like I am missing a few, but here we go!
And painting with COPA on July 1st at Griggs reservoir, Scioto river, oils on panel. Took too much time chatting and not enough time painting, so ran out of time to finish in the field. Finished this in the studio.
DAAL has an annual paint out of old Dublin with a contest open to all artists. This was the second year I participated. Last year was a dreary wet day. This year, it was overcast (until I was nearing completion), and after I finished, we had a rain shower.

I setup my easel near Le Chatelaine restaurant and liked the view of the corner of the building. Once I was finished, I had to frame and turn in the painting on the spot. I did not get a good closeup shot.
Check out my stuff there if you're on Instagram! Makes it really easy to post from my smartphone and then I forget my poor old blog.

I realized I had another painting to show here of the latest barn painting. I was so inspired with the photos I took of the two old barns a couple weeks ago, I had to paint one more scene! Here are some process shots.

I had a bit of trouble with the angles of the barn. In the end, I just settled with what I thought looked fine for my painting, and not a match for the photo. It was a strange angle and not enough of the roof line was visible to show the hip roof correctly.
I wanted to focus on the corner of the barn where the overhang was sagging and the flowers below that. I got to this stage, and the paint was too wet, so had to let it sit for a day.
Below is the finished painting. I struggled through, and there could be other improvements, but I don't like to overwork at painting.
